Information we collect
Information you provide
If you subscribe to the newsletter, we collect your email address and subscription status. Our newsletter provider also records information needed to manage the subscription, such as confirmation, delivery, bounce, and unsubscribe events.
If you contact us, we receive the information in your message, including your email address and anything else you choose to send.
Information collected when you visit
Our hosting and security provider automatically processes ordinary technical data needed to deliver and protect the site. This can include your IP address, browser and device type, requested page, referring page, and the date and time of the request. We may use aggregated traffic measurements to understand readership and site performance.
We do not use advertising cookies, build profiles for targeted advertising, or sell personal information. We do not send newsletter email addresses to site analytics.
How we use information
We use information to:
- send the newsletter and administer subscriptions;
- respond to questions, corrections, privacy requests, and other messages;
- operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve the site;
- measure readership in aggregate; and
- comply with law and protect the rights and safety of readers, the publication, and others.
When consent is required, we rely on the choice you make, such as confirming a newsletter subscription. In other cases, we process information as necessary to provide a service you requested, meet legal obligations, or pursue legitimate interests such as securing and improving the publication.
When we share information
We share information only as needed with providers that help us run the publication. These include Buttondown for newsletter subscriptions and delivery, and Cloudflare for hosting, content delivery, security, and operational traffic data. They process information under their own terms and privacy commitments.
We may also disclose information if required by law; to investigate fraud, abuse, or security threats; to protect legal rights or safety; or as part of a merger, financing, reorganization, or transfer of the publication. We do not share personal information with third parties for their own targeted advertising.
Your choices and rights
Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link. You may also ask us to access, correct, delete, or provide a copy of personal information associated with you, or object to or restrict certain processing. These rights vary by location and may be subject to legal exceptions. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.
Because we do not sell personal information or use it for cross-context behavioral advertising, there is no sale or targeted-advertising opt-out to exercise. Browser signals such as Global Privacy Control do not change that practice.
Retention and security
We keep subscriber information while a subscription is active. After you unsubscribe, we may retain a limited suppression record so that we honor your choice. We retain correspondence and technical records only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described here, including security, dispute resolution, and legal compliance.
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards appropriate to the information we hold. No internet transmission or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure.
International processing
The publication and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Those places may have different data-protection laws from the place where you live. Where required, providers use recognized safeguards for international transfers.
Children’s privacy
The site and newsletter are intended for a general audience and are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can address it.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy when our practices or legal obligations change. We will post the revised policy here and change the effective date. If a change materially affects how we use subscriber information, we will provide additional notice when appropriate.
